2024 Redcoat Scholarship Recipients

Ruth Kiney Memorial Scholarship

Congratulations to tenor sax player and Experience Captain, Arbella Amburn, for being awarded the Ruth Kiney Memorial Scholarship!

This scholarship is awarded to a member of the Redcoat Band who exemplifies the encouraging and caring qualities of Ms. Kiney, who often prioritized the well-being of fellow Redcoats above her own.

Ms. Kiney became known as a stand-in mom to members of the Redcoat Band. Her strength, courage, dignity, caring, and encouraging spirit touched the lives of all Redcoats during her twenty years of service.

Cassie Magee Moates Award

Congratulations to Hailey Norwood for being awarded the Cassie Magee Moates Award! This award was presented by Cassie’s husband, John, and their oldest daughter, Ava.

The Cassie Magee Moates Award is a very special recognition that is presented annually to the Flagline member who most exemplifies the spirit and character of Cassie Moates, our beloved Flagline coordinator whom we unexpectedly lost during the 2021 season.

Cassie was a fierce advocate for the Flagline who exemplified kindness, inclusion, and dedication to the Redcoat Band. She was a friend to everyone and made the UGA Flagline what it is today. She is remembered by the hundreds she taught and mentored with unwavering integrity and overflowing love. We are excited to honor her legacy each year.

Phyllis Dancz Memorial Award

Congratulations to Georgettes member Caroline Mason for being awarded the Phyllis Dancz Memorial Award.

This award is presented annually to the Redcoat Band auxiliary member who most exemplifies the spirit and character of Phyllis Dancz.

Dancz exemplified kindness, leadership, and a willingness to work beyond expectations.

Dennis Askew Satin Silver Sousaphone Scholarship

Congratulations to Katja Rintamaki for being awarded the Dennis Askew Satin Silver Sousaphone Scholarship.

This scholarship honors the noted alumnus, band captain, and earliest of the Redcoat satin silver Sousaphones. A 1987 graduate, Dennis’ enthusiasm for UGA and the Redcoats was fundamental to his character. He continued to evangelize for both during his graduate study and legendary career as tuba professor and School of Music director at UNC-Greensboro.

Lee and Linda Butts Terry-Redcoat Scholarship

Congratulations to Parker Taylor and Alex Carrillo for being awarded the Lee and Linda Butts Terry-Redcoat Scholarship!

This scholarship is awarded to active, deserving Terry students and Redcoat Band members who have displayed outstanding leadership skills.

Lee Butts and his wife, Linda Anderson Butts, met at the University of Georgia as students in the Terry College of Business. Their best memories outside of their academic studies involve performing together in the UGA Redcoat Band, where Lee played trombone and Linda played flute and piccolo.
